Description
A seismic assessment of a residential building revealed structural deficiencies in certain masonry walls. To ensure adequate load transfer during an earthquake, some walls had to be actively precompressed. This significantly increases the shear and bending resistance of the masonry.
The memory®-steel re-bar provided a simple and highly effective, technical solution. The bars were installed into cut grooves in the masonry and anchored into the concrete slabs at the top and bottom. To increase anchorage length, small mortar bases were created and connected with the concrete. Upon heating, the bars contract and apply prestress. Finally, the grooves are filled with mortar, enabling a strengthening solution with no loss of space.
